How to Choose a Private Label Footwear Manufacturer

Private label footwear lets a brand sell shoes under its own name without building a factory, a tooling library or a development team from scratch. You choose a style that is already proven in production, make it yours with materials, colors and branding, and launch it as your own product.

Manhattan Shoe Company has spent more than 20 years in the footwear industry helping brands do exactly that. This guide covers what a private label footwear manufacturer actually does, how the process works, and what to ask before you choose one.

What is private label footwear?

Private label footwear is a shoe produced by a manufacturer and sold under your brand. The base construction, last and outsole already exist and have been made at scale. You decide what makes it yours: upper materials, colorways, logos, insole prints, hardware, packaging and labels.

You own the brand, the customer relationship and the design direction. The manufacturer handles sourcing, sampling, production and quality control.

Private label is different from custom footwear development, where a new shoe is built from the ground up, often with new outsole tooling. We cover that path in Custom Footwear Development: From Idea to Production.

Who private label is for

Private label works well for:

  • Apparel and lifestyle brands adding footwear as a new category
  • Golf, pickleball and resort brands that want a shoe that matches the rest of the line
  • Retailers and boutiques building an exclusive house label
  • Hospitality and destination brands looking for slides, sandals or slippers with their own identity
  • Startups testing demand before investing in fully custom tooling

If your customer already trusts your brand, footwear is a natural extension. Private label is the lowest risk way to find out how much they want it.

What styles can be made as private label?

Most categories have proven constructions that can be customized. At Manhattan Shoe Company that includes sneakers, golf and pickleball shoes, slides, sandals, jellies, slippers, rain boots and other boots. If a style is trending, there is usually a proven base that can be adapted quickly.

How the private label process works

1. Tell us your idea

Start with your brand, your customer and the style you have in mind. Photos, mood boards and reference shoes all help. You do not need technical drawings for private label.

2. Develop your sample

We match your idea to a proven construction, then build a sample with your materials, colors and branding. Sample development is quoted per project, because the work depends on how much is changing. Private label samples typically take about 4 weeks.

3. Start production

Once you approve the sample, production runs 60 to 90 days depending on materials and complexity. Quality control happens during production and before shipment, against the approved sample.

Minimum order quantities

Private label minimums start at 300 pairs per style. Depending on the style and materials, some constructions require up to 600 pairs. Minimums stay low because the tooling and construction already exist.

What to ask a private label footwear manufacturer

Before you choose a partner, get clear answers to these questions:

  1. What are your minimums per style, and per color? Some manufacturers quote a low style minimum and then require a separate minimum for each colorway.
  2. How is sampling priced? Ask what the sample quote includes and how many rounds of revisions are expected.
  3. What are realistic timelines? Ask for sample and production timelines separately, and ask what changes them.
  4. What categories do you make well? A factory that excels at sneakers may not be the right partner for jellies or slippers.
  5. Who handles quality control? Ask when inspections happen and what the approved sample standard is.
  6. Can I move to custom development later? A good partner can grow with you from a proven style into a shoe only your brand has.
  7. How much industry experience is on the team? Footwear has a lot of moving parts. Experience shows up in fewer surprises.

Private label vs. custom development

Private label Custom development
Starting point Proven style already in production New design, often new tooling
Sample timeline About 4 weeks About 4 to 6 weeks
Minimum order 300 to 600 pairs per style Flexible, set per project
Best for Launching fast, testing demand A signature product only you have

Many brands start with private label, learn what their customer buys, then move into custom development for their hero style.
