Low MOQ Shoe Manufacturing: What Brands Should Know
The first number most brands ask a shoe manufacturer for is the minimum order quantity, or MOQ. It decides how much cash a launch needs, how much inventory you carry and how quickly you can test a new style.
At Manhattan Shoe Company, production minimums start at 300 pairs per style. This guide explains why footwear minimums exist, what drives them up or down, and how to plan a first order that fits your brand.
What is an MOQ in shoe manufacturing?
An MOQ is the smallest production run a factory will accept for one style. Footwear minimums are usually set per style, and sometimes per color or per material. A quote that sounds low per style can grow quickly if every colorway carries its own minimum, so always ask how it is counted.
Why shoe factories set minimums
Footwear production has real setup costs before the first pair is made:
- Lasts and outsole molds are made in every size in the run
- Materials are purchased in mill or supplier minimums, often by the yard or by the roll
- Cutting dies and production lines are set up for each style
- Branded components such as insoles, labels and hardware have their own minimums
Minimums spread those costs across enough pairs that each pair is priced fairly.
What makes a low MOQ possible
The biggest factor is whether the shoe already exists in production.
Proven styles (private label). When the construction, lasts and outsole tooling are already in use, there is no new tooling to pay for. You customize materials, colors and branding. That is why private label minimums at Manhattan Shoe Company start at 300 pairs, with some styles requiring up to 600 depending on construction and materials. Read more in How to Choose a Private Label Footwear Manufacturer.
Custom development. A brand new shoe usually needs new outsole tooling and lasts. Minimums for custom development are flexible and set per project, based on the tooling, materials and construction involved. The full process is in Custom Footwear Development: From Idea to Production.
Other factors that move a minimum:
- Material choice. Stock materials keep minimums low. Custom-dyed leathers or specialty knits can carry supplier minimums of their own.
- Number of colorways. Splitting a run across many colors can push each color below what the factory or material supplier can run.
- Size range. A wide size run spreads pairs thin across many molds and sizes.
- Category. Injection-molded styles like jellies and slides behave differently from stitched sneakers or boots.
Development is flexible, production has a floor
Brands sometimes confuse sampling with production. Sample development at Manhattan Shoe Company is a paid project that is quoted based on the work involved, and it can be shaped around where you are. You might sample one style, or compare two options before committing.
The production minimum is the floor once the sample is approved. Knowing that up front means there are no surprises when you are ready to order.
How to plan a first order at 300 pairs
A 300-pair run is enough to launch a style properly if you plan it with intent.
- Start with one hero style. Put your volume behind the shoe that best represents your brand.
- Limit colorways. One or two strong colors usually outperform four thin ones on a first order.
- Build a size curve from your data. Use apparel sales or customer data to weight core sizes and keep the ends of the run light.
- Use stock materials where you can. Save custom materials for the details customers notice most.
- Plan the timeline backward. Samples take about 4 weeks for proven styles. Production takes 60 to 90 days after approval. Work back from your launch date.
- Plan your reorder. Decide in advance what sell-through would trigger a second run or a new color.
Questions to ask about minimums
- Is the minimum per style, per color or per material?
- Does the minimum change by size range?
- Are branded components such as insoles, labels and boxes included?
- What happens to the minimum on a reorder of the same style?
- What is the minimum if I move this style into custom development later?
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for custom shoes?
